Keep an Eye on Giuliani

I came across this article on Real Clear Politics that discusses Rudy Giuliani as a potential winner for the Republicans in the 2008 elections.

I have to admit, I like Giuliani. His views tend to agree with mine, being a fiscal conservative and a social moderate. As the article points out, his support for gay rights and abortion will be a problem with the hardcore social conservatives in the Republican party. The 2008 elections are still fairly open, and a Giuliani candidacy would draw supporters in both parties, much more so than someone like Hillary or Bore Gore. Giuliani could run on a platform of leadership, with a solid record of managing a large enterprise (New York City) while working both with supporters and opponents toward a greater good.

You know, Guiliani would make a pretty good Evil Party(tm) candidate for president, but his views are complex enough so that they wouldn’t really fit into the 15-second snippets that were the bane of the Gore and Kerry campaigns in 2000 and 2004. And he’s from the Northeast, too, so there’s all that carefully set up antagonism against effete eastern intellectuals that going against him. I suspect that Ms. Clinton would demolish him in the election, because she’s a lot meaner than he is.

(Of course I’m a barking liberal, so you can take my political opinions with a grain of salt.)
