Andrew Garrett has come to a conclusion I reached a while ago: No-one links to the linkers. It’s true. Very few bloggers who simply post links become very popular. Blog traffic is driven by content. True, some content can be inspired or found by linking to other items, with commentary, but creating original content, consistently, is the key to driving repeat traffic. I have a lot of repeat traffic over on Dogcaught, my railfanning blog, because I consistently provide original interesting content. So far, I haven’t seen a lot of repeat traffic here, because I’m still finding my stride as to what Another Blogger will be all about. My traffic and AdSense numbers reflect this situation.
I’ve said it once, and I’ll say it again: content is king. If you want a popular website/blog/portal, you must consistently provide interesting content for your visitors. If you don’t entertain them, someone else will.
