Netscape has a Desperate Delicious Problem
Netscape is desparate, offering to pay the top linkers for getting content into Netscape’s new Digg clone. That’s a sure sign that the site just isn’t catching on with any significant number of folks.
Netscape has a del.icio.us problem. Digg was first to the game, and has built up a “critical mass” of users. Netscape launched a clone, without enough new/shiny features to distract the masses. Consequently everyone still uses Digg, and Netscape gets desperate for links. Unless they come up with something new, something unique, or something that differentiates them in some big way, there’s no reason for folks to use Netscape.
Why do I say it’s a del.icio.us problem? Because del.icio.us has the social bookmarking scene wrapped up, and clones aren’t making any significant difference.
