Weekend Geek Project

It’s not really that geeky, but Jen initially wanted to setup one of our old PCs in the family room so she could check mail and surf the web while keeping an eye on Brooklyn. I started looking at how the old CRT would look on an end table, with the PC underneath, and just wasn’t thrilled with the idea of the whole thing.

Then the obvious idea hit me, why not move her main PC out there? I did a quick check on Craigslist and found a decent corner-style computer desk. Despite the fact that hell itself is slightly cooler than the Portland area today, earlier in the day my father in law had me help him move a huge TV, so I made a phone call and told him turnabout’s fair play and enlisted his help to move the desk.

Next, to get the thing connected. I really had no reason to string CAT 5 to the family room, and my Actiontec DSL modem has 802.11g wireless, so I just needed a wireless adapter for the machine. I did some browsing of BestBuy.com, did some googling for reviews, and placed an online order for the Belkin Wireless-G USB 2.0 adapter. I’ve enabled wireless on my router, setup security (a combination of methods) and now have Jen surfing the web from the other side of the house.
