My Libertarian Checklist: Gay Marriage
As I evaluate whether my views are more in line with the Libertarians than the Republicans, I’ve decided to look at things on an issue-by-issue basis, and this will be the first installment. Today I came across this post by Ann Althouse asking what is the rational basis for banning same-sex marriage?
This is one issue where I am definitely more in the Libertarian camp than the Republicans. I feel we need to treat everyone equally. An establishment of a formal partnership definition (whether it be called marriage, civil unions, or some other name) should apply to all partnerships regardless of gender or orientation. Given that there is no conclusive evidence that homosexual or heterosexual partnerships are inherently more beneficial or harmful to society, spending countless hours debating the merits of such relationships is wasted time.
Tally: Libertarian 1, Republican 0
