PayPerPost: Calm Down, Think

I don’t understand why folks like Jason Calcanis are in such an uproar over PayPerPost. PayPerPost’s blog advertising system lets advertisers offer up a potential for a blogger to make a couple dollars to talk about a product. Nobody is forced to post anything, and a blogger who “sells out” and posts a bunch of useless crap will quickly find their readers going away. I’ve looked a the PayPerPost details and quite a few of the so-called “advertisements” are just folks wanting some publicity, leaving it up to the blogger to decide if they say good (or bad) things about the product.

For someone who makes all of their salary off of running advertising-supported blogs to get in a tizzy about blogs that run advertising seems a bit odd to me…

The reason I fight for the blogosphere is because I love it. I love blogs, blogging, and bloggers… I’ve spent the last three years working on building the community and business, and I just can’t stand to see people come in and try and take this amazing medium and use it for COVERT marketing.

I agree with you 100% that advertisers and bloggers who do covert marketing will be ignored and/or hated. However, there are a lot of folks who are new to the media space and they don’t understand exactly how evil this stuff is. It’s up to us to hold the line… I mean, Tim Draper invested in PayPerPost! That’s a big validation, and I’m shocked he would put his name on covert marketing frankly.
