First there was internet radio, then as broadband became more widely available we started seeing more video sharing and the rise of YouTube. Now there’s a company called tVadio that’s working on software for Internet TV. If this takes off it will likely be a new definition for Web TV.
If you go check out their listing of TV Channels you’ll see there’s an interesting variety of things lined up from motorsports to shopping. I see they have a Classic Cartoons channel which features the “oldies” of the cartoon world such as Popeye, Betty Boop, and so on. One drawback (at this point) is that several of the channels are UK-specific which may not be of much interest to me in the United States but I expect that as the service grows there will be new channels added to the lineup.
The software is still in development but if they can deliver on what they promise and pull it off in a profitable manner I think there could be some real gems. The ability for someone to deliver their own television program over the internet with a lot less overhead than a traditional TV station could let some interesting niche programming reach a wider audience… and since it’s internet-based, there’s no such thing as a narrow local “market.” It will be interesting to see how this plays out…
