Giuliani Should Run as a Libertarian

Giuliani’s liberal stances on things like abortion and gay rights make him unacceptable to the hardcore conservatives and thus he’s going to be in a tough position to run as a Republican in 2008.  This really shouldn’t be news to anyone.  Which leads to the question: should he run as a Libertarian?  I know that he doesn’t agree 100% with the party platform, but he’s fiscally conservative and a supporter of individual liberties.  He’s more in line with my views than with anyone else I know is considering a run in 2008…

“Supporter of individual liberties”? Giuliani is strongly anti-gun rights, tried his hardest to reduce the number of “adult” stores in NYC, cracked down on bars and nightclubs, and had nothing but praise for the NYPD whenever they gunned down Yet Another Unarmed Black Man (including releasing Patrick Dorismond’s supposedly sealed juvenile record just to make a dead man look bad). He also strongarmed the Brooklyn Museum into pulling controversial artwork. And, not surprisingly, he’s all in favor of the Drug War. He’s OK with gays and abortion, and that seems to be about it. If you think he’s a libertarian, I want some of what you’re smoking.
