The incoming Democratic chair of the House Ways and Means Committee will introduce legislation to actively draft Americans into the armed forces. New York Representative Charles Rangel thinks that it will act as a deterrent on the premises that if Americans are being drafted, we’ll be less likely to go to war.
I found it interesting that instead of folks who are drafted actually going to war, his program instead lets them serve the country in a variety of homeland roles, but like all good Democratic programs includes the government handing out free money at the end!
Perhaps a better option would be to look at how much world policing we’re doing, cutting down on those activities that don’t directly impact our country, and let the all-volunteer military do what it does best.
(didn’t the Democrats threaten that votes for Republicans would lead to a draft?)
