Any geek loves a new laptop. What makes it truly wonderful is when it’s free.
My brother-in-law purchased an HP consumer laptop a couple years ago. Since then, he’d had a variety of problems with viruses, spyware, and a couple of hardware issues. A couple months ago, he mentioned the laptop was completely dead, wouldn’t boot at all, and needed to be replaced. I assumed it was in fact dead.
This week he bought a new laptop… apparently a Macbook.  I casually mentioned that if he didn’t want the old one I’d take a look at it and see if I could find any use for it. Today I picked up the machine and played around with it a bit. As far as I can tell, the only thing wrong was a nasty virus/spyware situation. The hard disk has been wiped, an OS has been installed, and I’m in the process of getting software reloaded. It’s been a good afternoon.
