5 Ways to Prevent Repeat Blog Visitors

How do you keep me from reading your blog? How do you ensure that the first time I read your blog is the last time? Here’s how:

  1. Don’t have a feed. This almost goes without saying, but if you don’t offer an RSS or Atom feed, I’m not going to keep reading your blog. Even in 2006, there are sites that are still launching blogs without feeds.
  2. Make me load a plugin. If your site wants me to load some sort of ActiveX module, RealPlayer, or some other plugin just to view the page, I’m outta there.
  3. Make me register. I won’t register to leave comments, and I definitely won’t register just to read the site (or read full articles).
  4. Keep Me Guessing About You. You need a page, or at a minimum a little blurb about yourself. I’m going to be very skeptical of sources who won’t identify themselves or provide contact information. I won’t give much credibility to someone unidentified and unreachable.
  5. Don’t Use Spellcheck or complete sentences. If I have to strain my brain to figure out what it is you’re trying to say because I can’t interpret your misspellings or massive grammar errors, I likely won’t be back.
