I got a new PC a couple weeks ago and am still getting settled in. I’ve spent a bunch of time lately installing, uninstalling, and generally contemplating software.
Search. I’m getting to know Vista’s built-in search. I haven’t run into any particular limitations with respect to desktop search but there’s one area in which it lacks: the ability to search my Gmail account. Perhaps there’s a way to do it but I haven’t found it yet even with some Googling. I contemplated Google Desktop Search but that’s a bunch of overheard just for this one feature that I’m not even sure I need. As an added comment I couldn’t make any sort of Twitter gadget work in GDS.
Windows Live Writer. Does anyone know if this product has been abandoned?
UAC: Allow or cancel? Really, once you’ve got things setup, it only seems to affect me a couple times a day, which really isn’t that annoying.
Mozy: I’ve started using Mozy for online backup. The experience using their client on Vista has been totally smooth. If you want to check it out, they offer 2GB of storage for free. Use this referral link and we’ll both get some extra storage for free.
iTunes and iPod: Apple and Microsoft have finally released the various software updates for an iPod to correctly work with iTunes under Vista, and it’s working great for me. On a supporting note, my 4 year old Firewire card was entirely plug-and-play.
Compatibility: So far, I’ve only run into one piece of software which won’t run under Vista, which is an older version of ProShow. On the hardware front, my only problems have been with the previously-blogged Wacom driver.
It sounds like a lot of folks are freaked out by Vista, but so far I haven’t had anything that makes me want to go back to XP.
