Trying Trillian: Disabling Gmail Notifications

In an effort to consolidate various messaging into one location, I’ve started using Trillian Pro to keep track of my contacts and manage my IM.  One issue I ran into was that by default Trillian will display new mail notifications in popup toast if the server supports it.  I’m using my Gmail/Gtalk jabber account, so every time I received a new message in Gmail, Jabber would pop up an annoying message.

I searched the Trillian options for quite a while before I found the fairly-obscure location where this popup can be disabled.

  1. Open Trillian.
  2. From the Trillian menu, choose Connections, then Manage my Connections.
  3. On the left, choose Identities & Connections.
  4. Click on your Gmail/Jabber account.
  5. Click the Change button.
  6. Click the Miscellaneous tab.
  7. Clear the Display unread mail notifications, if server supports it checkbox.
  8. Click Save Settings, then Close.

Now you can avoid yet another popup interruption.

This has really helped me. In the new Trillian Astra, it’s very similar:

Steps 2 and 3 are simplified: From the Trillian menu, choose Manage Connections.
In Step 5, the button is marked Settings.
In Step 7, the checkbox is marked Alert me when mail arrives for this account.

Hope this helps anyone else who stumbles on this page!
