On Marketing: Open Your Doors

Perhaps this post should be subtitled: “Me Sounding Like Seth Godin.”

Every day, I walk past City Coffee in Northeast Portland on my way to catch the light rail train.  I’ve noticed something that makes them stand out from the other coffee shops.  City Coffee has opened their doors.  Literally.  The door is propped open, allowing the smells of freshly brewed coffee to waft out onto the sidewalk.  A few weeks ago, it was over 100 degrees, and the door was open, shooting cool air against folks walking by.

Yesterday I watched someone walk down the sidewalk, pause at the smell of the coffee, and walk inside.

If you’re selling something… are your doors open?
