Techies see things differently than designers. Case in point: yesterday I ran into Bram on the train.
I said to him let’s talk about a logo for WordCamp Portland.
His take was that we Talked about how brashCreative may help with WordCamp’s visual identity.
I’d like a logo. Bram wants to help with a “visual identity.” Neither view is better or more right than the other… but keep in mind that even something simple can be seen from different viewpoints.

The real question is whether you would be on the same page if you had just tapped him on the shoulder, rather than “running” in to him.
Caveat: Not trying to put words in anyone’s mouth, but doing my best to act as a Rosetta Stone (and probably failing).
That said…
“I need a logo” is the designer version of the common tech request, “I need a Web site.” Or maybe even more appropriately “I need a database.”
At the point of hearing those requests, the techie or designer begins to make the intuitive leap toward what they hope they were hearing. ‘)
I only say this because I’m a marketer who knows little about either tech or design, yet has the hubris to cast aspersions that I do.
