WordPress Love: the Portland 2.7 Release Party

December 14, 2008

Last Friday, Chris O’Rourke and I hosted a release party in Portland for WordPress 2.7. We had around 60 people drop in to hang out, have some pizza and beer, and talk about WordPress. A few folks brought laptops and actually did the upgrade at the party*; even more wanted to just talk about their blogs and pick others’ minds about various bloggy topics. A big thanks to CubeSpace for allowing us to use their facility and helping with logistics.

What it's All AboutIt was a great time, and again I was thrilled to see the blogging community come together around WordPress to help each other out. The photo here shows Lorelle Van Fossen helping Realtor Dale Chumbley with his blog. This is what these events are all about: bloggers from various backgrounds coming together to share ideas and help each other.

Thanks to the Portland blog community for making the release party a success. View more WordPress party photos on Flickr.

* turns out that the upgrade was so easy, many people who thought they might need help were able to upgrade earlier in the day without any hassle. Isn’t WordPress great?

I had a great time! I also love love love that in Portland it is a completely normal event for geeks to get beer and spend their Friday night as a "help desk" for people who are upgrading their blogs. Portland Geeks Rock!

Aaron, I had a great time at the event. Portland/Vancouver is very blessed to have such a wonderful tech community that is so willing to help out. Whether in person or on Twitter I've found everyone most helpful. I really appreciated the "crash CSS course" from you & Nick Bostic. I also appreciated all of Lorelle's help (and Chris O'Rourke's too when we could keep him focused) ;?) The upgrade went smoothly on both WordPress 2.7 and also on my Thesis theme. Thanks again!

Mmmm…we need something like that in Berlin. Maybe I'll do something like it for the next upgrade, sounds like fun :-)
