Portland loves blogging, and Portland loves WordPress. With so many great bloggers in the area using the WordPress platform, I’m excited to announce the first meeting of the Portland WordPress User Group.
Where/When: Thursday, January 15th from 6:00-7:30pm at CubeSpace. Please RSVP on Upcoming.
We’ll talk about:
- Getting started
- Meeting time/dates (monthly)
- Future meeting topics or speaker ideas
- The idea of a regular “help session” / “genius bar” type thing
- Some of the great new features of 2.7 that folks might not have found
Come join us and let’s kick off what is sure to be a fun and helpful group.
* Preemptive FAQ: No, we’re not trying to compete with Beer and Blog. The user group will have a bit more formality in a calmer environment for folks to learn new things, get help, and improve their WordPress sites. While I’m sure there will be a lot of crossover in the audience, the topics and tone will be different.

Is there a way to get included on a mailing list? I want to play, but I don't live in Portland, yet.
Not sure about a mailing list, but we'll be talking about setting up a blog for sure.

Will this be a "power users" group? Would it be over the head of newbies? Think I might invite a client, but don't want to scare her off with Portland geekatude.
Part of what we'll discuss at the first meeting is the direction of the group, but in my mind we'll feature a variety of topics, some of which are going to be more advanced and some of which will be fairly basic. One of the ideas I have (and would like to see happen) is that every month there will be a couple folks setup specifically to provide help for questions or problems people might be having… it would be a great resource for newbies.
In short… definitely invite your client… I hope it's a learning experience for all.
So since you're not competing with Beer and Blog, I take it there won't be any of the former?
How about whisky instead? Could call it WordPress and Whisky™.

Beer and Blog is really more of the Portland tech scene happy hour anyway. We're also going to do more with other platforms as well. Totally stoked about this user group and will be attending the first meet up!
