Taking a Stand to Promote OpenID

OpenID is a win-win for blog comments. It’s a win for the comment author, since it means less info to type. It’s a win for the blog owner, since it means the comments have a “real” identity behind them. There are some great OpenID providers out there (I’m a big fan of Vidoop).

I’m going to take a bit of a stand. Effective immediately, I will no longer comment on tech blogs that don’t support OpenID for comment authentication. Google offers it as a Blogger option. It’s available as a super-easy-to-install WordPress plugin. Movable Type has it as a built-in feature. If you’re using another lesser-known system, rally the troops for OpenID support.

And I’ll put my time where my mouth is: I’ll help you. If you follow those links above, and can’t figure it out, or you try it and it doesn’t work. I’ll help. Send me an e-mail. I want you to have OpenID.

I realize I’m just one (mostly insignificant) guy. And the reality is that if I stop commenting on some blogs, nobody will notice. But somewhere in my little fantasy world, this move might help spread OpenID adoption, and as Martha says, that’s a Good Thing™.

Seriously, Oregonian, Will You Ever Get It?

In the past I’ve criticized the Oregonian’s online presence, namely the previous incarnations of their news blog at OregonLive.com.  Things have improved, and I was happy to see an Oregonian Twitter feed.

But I really have to ask, is there any information about anything newsworthy here?

Non-Information

The headline could’ve just said “Stuff Happened” and it would be about as informative…

Rude Portland Bicyclist on MAX

Originally uploaded by ahockley.
Portland is touted as a bike-friendly community, which is cool by me, except for the occasional idiot like this guy. Instead of using the bicycle hook to hang his bike on the side of the train car, this jackass locked his bike to an upright post where it then blocked half of the aisle and took up a bunch of standing room.

Of course, one of the discussions on bikeportland.org led to a commenter telling me that TriMet shouldn’t be trying to carry more people, only carry more bikes. I guess attitudes like that lead to asshat behavior like this.

A Giant Middle Finger to Portland Commuters

Ah, the Rose Festival and the arrival of the Fleet.  Which, for some reason, always runs into the evening commute… there’s 24 hours in a day, but for some reason the city and festival organizers manage to extend a great big “Fuck  You” to anyone who needs to cross the river as part of their commute, or depend on public transportation.
